Correspondence, leases, mining and drilling reports, proposals, consulting files and reports, mine production and shipping statements, maps, letter books, minute books, and financial records of a family-owned mining company incorporated in 1911 by mining entrepreneur Edmund Joseph Longyear to encompass his exploration and drilling activities on Minnesota iron ranges and elsewhere. The name of the corporation was later shortened to Longyear Company (ca.1970) and, in 1988, the corporate offices were moved to Salt Lake City. Longyear and his company were associated with other firms interested in townsite development on Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range and in mineral lands, leases, and mining engineering elsewhere in Minnesota and throughout the world. Three major subsidiaries--E.J. Longyear Exploration Company (exploration and prospecting), E.J. Longyear manufacturing Company (manufacture and sale of diamond drills and other equipment), and E.J. Longyear Development Company (shaft sinking, tunneling, and mine development)--were incorporated in 1922. Records for 1890-1901 pertain largely to iron mine exploration and development on the Mesabi Range, diamond drilling, leases on mineral lands, economic conditions in the iron industry and in Mesabi Range communities, and civic affairs in Hibbing, Minnesota. Material dating from 1902-1949 reflects the expansion of Longyear's activities and includes information on drilling operations, mineral exploration and resources, and mining and shipping of minerals and ores in the United States and abroad by the Longyear companies and their clients. It also concerns activities of other mining, real estate, and related organizations which Longyear owned, managed, or held an interest in; mineral lands and leases; United States iron ore and steel industries; iron mining and processing companies in Minnesota and the United States; townsite development in northern Minnesota; and Longyear's family and personal affairs. The Lee C. Armstrong and Percy W. Donovan Files (mainly 1940-1975) focus primarily on Longyear mineral exploration consulting projects on the Mesabi, Cuyuna, and Gogebic iron ranges and elsewhere involving iron, copper, nickel, and gold. There is also information about directors' meetings and activities, and the history of the company. Correspondents include Edmund J., John Munro, and Robert D. Longyear; Armstrong, Donovan, and other company officials, directors, and employees; business partners and clients; and several professional and industry organizations.
